MORGAN JONES' TOP 10-
So, the fact of the matter is that I'm too hip to listen to more than three new records in the same year they were released. Music has to be "old" before it's "good." Here's what I've listened to a lot this year, including the three albums that were sort of new in 2007...and two that haven't been released or finished yet that I know will change my playlist forever.
1. Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
So this was released late in 2006, but was in constant rotation chez Magoo for all of 2007. It's a phenomenal record with incredible orchestration that I imagine to have been recorded in a little cabin out in the Alaskan wilderness even though these guys are not from Alaska. They've upped their "indie cred" by taking the helm as Leslie Feist's backing band since she got all huge and shit.
2. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Because it was played at every house party of 2007 and is on every BHAM hipster's Best of list. Oh, and it is a fun album.
3. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81
BRMC returns from the bluesy, dirty post-sobriety "Howl" with "Baby 81." I love this band. And this record is pretty great despite being a little over produced on a couple tracks.
4. Skeeter Davis - The Essential Skeeter Davis
Having been raised a country girl, I can relate to sweet lil Skeeter's plight. I, too, would beat the hell out of any woman trying to steal my man. And I would beat the hell out of my man for sneaking around.
5. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Again, a 2006 album that exploded in 2007. Modern motown blah, blah, blah. I just love watching this trainwreck! (Now I feel guilty for saying that.)
6. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request
Yes, this album is old as hell and any hipster has long had this in rotation, but being the girl child that I am, I am just now discovering it. Don't hate me for not having been born yet. Anton's bullshit is sexy bullshit (and prolific, too). I have since been slightly motivated to make a t-shirt: Crank 'em out like Anton. That'll be $50 for spraypaint on an American Apparel. Call me.
7. Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood - Nancy and Lee
This album is HOTT. "Some Velvet Morning" stands as the sexiest song to date. Just tell me, who is Phedra and where are these secret flowers that she's growing?
8. Louis - (no name yet)
His "Freakshow Revenge" EP from 2006 was so fucking good and everyone still talks about the phantom Regia album, so I am confident this long-awaited release will be legendary. (No pressure or anything.)
9. Duquette Johnston - (no name yet)
If anyone heard the December preview of Duke's newest songs, they know that the man has stumbled upon something pretty great. As I said, things aren't good until they're old, and in the words of P.Lovinggood, these songs "sound OLD!" Yes, I am marrying this man, but I bear no bias. I would actually listen to these songs when he's not around to see what I really think. And I really think this is something to keep an ear out for.
10. I don't have a tenth. That's how hip I am. I won't even give you that.
