i didn't play on the record, so i'm free to praise it as much as i want to. i've been playing with through the sparks on and off since march 2007. some of the songs on this record started getting performed live almost 3 years ago. finally the record has been released (digitally) and people are starting to hear it. it is by far their best album. and it is short, just 9 songs - but its the perfect length. each song gets your attention. there's a plan for a cd printing soon and possibly a vinyl pressing. here's an over-the-top rave review of worm moon waning , which was released last week. i've updated their myspace page with some fresh images, formatting & code. i'm also doing a beta page for the album site. i can't explain it, but these images actually improve my mood, make me creatively optimistic, inspire me to be a better designer, and maybe even a better person. these are taken from my various flickr sets.

new tascam 424 mkIII - after a few weeks of looking around on ebay, i finally got a retro analog dream machine. it is arguably the best cassette-based four track ever made. it is a tascam 424 mk3 and it has 4 xlr inputs, great channel strip/eq features and a well designed interface. the idea behind getting this machine, is to sift through about 20 or so cassettes containing about 5 years worth of demos from the 90's, and eventually emerge from the other side with a finished, coherent set of songs. i listened through several tapes last night, and a lot of them contain multiple versions of recordings, with different lead parts, or set at different tempos. some are nearly complete, some are just rough scattered musical piles of debris. archived cassettes & gear list - about 10 years ago, i went through the best material from these cassette and bounced it all down to mp3 files for archiving. i messed around with a few of these in 2001-2002 and used some drum loop ideas h...

alison and i went to see the man or astroman? early show saturday evening at bottletree. they are legends in the southeast, particularly in auburn, birmingham and athens, ga. they peaked in the late 90's as a the alt rock era's answer to devo. sorta . below is a pic i took during the set: brian teasley, the drummer for moa? is also the co-founder (along with his girlfriend) of the bottletree. great set, great projection visuals. the sound was a bit muddy, but i'm sure they tweeked it for the 2nd show later that evening. here's the al.com article about the band and the reunion... and here's some video of the show we went to:

( this entry has been edited ) this week marks four years since all 4 members of the spots first played together. i played two shows in feb '06 with brian and shane, but clint had some gigs, so he didn't join us for a show until april. i was not the their first bass player. they initially had grey watson, a guitarist, playing bass. but for one reason or another, he didn't work out... and they asked me to join at clint's wedding in dec '05. i'd never heard anything about, nor met grey until his band opened for the spots in april 2009 at speakeasy. i remember that night, both bands played great, and we both got mutually ____ in the ____ by _______________, who thought it was an ok thing to do, to pay the spots $120 to headline a show at speakeasy, where we had been the defacto residency band the year before. my first conversation with grey was me apologizing to his band for them only getting $100. flash forward a few months... and grey watson joined through the s...
