here's the proposed set list for the cd release. a nice balance of old songs, songs from the cd and new songs never performed. the last track is an old blues standard. we rehearsed for several hours on saturday. we also recorded a one take of creases and cadillacs. not album worthy, but good for a document. creases ended up sounding like vintage coldplay. we will probably modify the title of that song at some point. * = old + = from e.p. ^ = new + perfect kingdom + hwy + bad luck sound of silence * en la puerta * cadillacs * sophia ^ creases ^ i don't want to say goodbye * lonely broom + gasoline satisfied mind

i'm apparently a part of it. i flipped out when this aired when i was 9. it is at once incredible and unintentionally ironic, and spooky in its overt commercialism and naivety. selling shitty sugar water to the break-dancing (read: inner city) youth. thanks michael.

According to a recent study by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, 73 percent of California drivers change their oil more frequently than required. This same scenario no doubt repeats itself across the country. Besides wasting money, this translates into unnecessary consumption of $100-a-barrel oil, much of it imported. Using 2005 data, the Board estimates that Californians alone generate about 153.5 million gallons of waste oil annually, of which only about 60 percent is recycled. Used motor oil poses the greatest environmental risk of all automotive fluids because it is insoluble, persistent, and contains heavy metal and toxic chemicals. One gallon of used oil can foul the taste of one million gallons of water. i got a question from a few people about what i use for the dj set and the spots visuals. i'm using the the fairly inexpensive but amazingly fluid and inspiring numark nuvj with arkaos software for mac osx. last year during the spots residency at speakeasy, i used software called g-force, which i liked initially because it reacted to the audio and could be programmed liked crazy. but it looked, as my art-director friend, hunter barrow pointed out, like a really hi-res song visualizer. not organic enough. alas... every second of motion film or graphic ever filmed can potentially be used with nuvj. not bad.

the new issue of thicket magazine hits the shelves today, featuring an interview with elliot of the dexateens and some record reviews, including a favorable and amusing review of the self-titled debut spots ep. this weekend, the spots are headlining the two-day event celebrating the two year anniversary of speakeasy, one of my favorite venues. much respec' to hunter and the thicket staff as well as george and the staff at speakeasy, who always treat us well. the spots will be playing on saturday, june 7th beginning around 9:30 pm. word on the street is this will sell out. let's hope so.
