"i'm just a face in the crowd... nothing to worry about... no need to try and stand out... i'm getting smaller and smaller and smaller..."
the past several days. my mood is shit. overcast today. raining for the last two days. low pressure area. oppressive humidity.
friday. issues in traffic. gasoline bailout. packing for freedom creek. tired. burned two mix cd's for various road trips coming up in the summer. i can't rely on the radio 100% to provide a clean signal for my ipod transmission. so, i still have to rely on the increasingly ridiculous cd format.
the summer '05 mix is as follows...
{day_mix}
1. turin brakes _blue hour
2. tears for fears _everybody loves a happy ending
3. takako minekawa _plash
4. cardigans _new coo coo

------------------ moving on----------------
i've been listening almost obsessively to the new nin cd. i'm not really sure why. it isn't his best record, but there is an undeniable confidence in the arrangements. the first track, all the love in the world, is beautiful. scattered beats, anxious tight vocal, and a big curve ball and the end. i really like the fact that he provided no information at all in the cd packaging. like me, trent knows that the concept of the "cd package" is bullshit.
all of the lyrics, info, session info, etc. is online.
nin.com/with_teeth
simple... and flexible.
instead if killing an extra 500 trees to print a bunch of liner pages, trent/nin can actually change the packaging/art info on the site as things progress. it's fucking 2005. nobody reads anymore. america is over, we will become our parents, let's kill the cd. (i still heart vinyl though)
i'm thinking the ashes cd will have a similar fate. we are approaching about 100 citations of literary works present in the lyrics so far. there's no plausable way to package it. at least not for now. perhaps a limited run of the album in a book/cd type format and then release the cd(s) in a slip case and prompt everyone to visit "the internets."
{by the way... your government hates you}
what else...
freedom creek... very hot for may. southern.
it is frightening how much of the old south still breathes and scuttles along underneath the porch, scratching and scraping it's wirey tentacles along the ground.
got pulled over by a cop/clansman for not wearing a seat belt. we "smuggled" 4 beers into a dry county. no ticket. great mix of several hundred people at the festival. i met willie king, who was probably drunk.
the music and the live mix at the festival... all stellar. great performers. really great drum sound. i'll post video later in the week.
the girls got into a fender bender in the parking area. not too bad. at least a lawyer hit them.
some other things happened... and some thoughts ran thru my mind...
{scene missing}.
the power got knocked out and the music at the festival stopped around 6:30 pm. we left by 7pm. the vibe was getting tense. too many drunk campers and not enough music to keep them occupied. i took two rolls of film and some micro-video... to which i am addicted.
jeff, the owner of the recording studio where we have been working, was also there... he had a rough night. a dude got shot at the festival. i think he's dead.
{scene missing}
we started late on sunday at the studio... jeff had to get back from the festival. we finished the drums for the "new song", and i did a series of overdubs and cymbal flourishing. i overdubbed a kick drum part that nobody understood.
we then switched gears and began listening to everything we have recorded thus far at the studio... i have recorded thus far, drum parts for... na na na, lonely broom, beautiful, midmorning, ****** of s******, endless light, "the new song", hwy., and some alternate endings. the women of long story short arrived later in the evening to check out the studio and hear the new parts of the album. ashby recorded some initial acoustic and vocal parts for hwy. we almost stiffed the pizza guy after a breakdown in attention.
houston wood came up from mobile and hung out at the studio most of the afternoon. he seemed pleased with the new material. he mentioned that one song was a bit "coldplayesce." and as soon as he said it, i realized he was right. it is an amazing song nonetheless. he probably feels the same way about the album as i do, at least sub-conciously.
{scene missing} we'll leave it at that.
yesterday was the eighth anniversary of jeff buckley's drowning in the wolf river in 1997. there are sadists controlling the universe.
one more nin thing to note... trent likes pushing the envelope.. he has begaun making available the actual tracks from some of his new songs for people to manipulate and destroy... all in apple's garage band format. interesting.

Hello all-
For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results.
After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So... You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems. Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like. I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo). There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
