the big one (part 1)

ok. two posts in one month. september marks one year of this journal thing. i might be taking a break from it for a while... my life will be changing shape here over the next month or so. i'm hoping all positive. i have a four sided life. it's possible that all sides might be in harmony.

then again i'm old enough to know better... so... lemme break out a calendar and see what i've been up to this month.

ok... i left for a few mins. got heckled by this black homeless dude downtown who always calls me white boy. an obvious mental case. that kinda sucks. homeless and nuts. i guess i don't feel too bad about turning 31. besides, some girl on myspace just told me i look like jeremy sisto. i'm gonna go ahead and file that under "huge compliment."

so... the days leading up to my birthday 9/12-16th... were supposed to be all awesome and funky. some of them were. i spent some time editing "na na na" and another track. there were a few shows i thought about going to but i passed on them. on thursday the 15th i went with my graphic designer friend traci to see i-nine and blue merle at workplay. both bands had eccentric lead singers. the singer for i-nine kept falling onto her knees in some big histrionic tantrum.

great band though. i didn't realize that they weren't all acoustic. they played some rockin' stuff too. ran into tangie and her friend from cumberland and kimmee as i like to call her. the night took an unexpected turn after the show and i'll write about that off camera.

friday the 16th was supposed to be coldplay at the bjcc... but little sissy limey boy chris martin got sick. i was hella pissed because that was a birthday present. so instead i sat around ashby's house while him and christine spent two hours trying to turn me onto phish. umm... rumor has it that they were like baddass in concert once.

actually... trey is a sicko guitarist and i appreciate their eccentric wit... but i'm too developed of a player to fawn over too many people nowadays. i don't even buy cd's anymore. i spend way too much time recording and obsessing over my own musical bullshit.

i'm an only child. i have the self-absorbtion gene.

saturday... my birthday... i woke up about 11 and went down to the studio to do eight hours of mixing. the mixing actually went fairly smoothly and we put two more songs to bed... "sophia" and the (working title) adam/eve song thing. ashby and christine got me this really feminine christ litho in a frame from the naked art gallery. very nice.

i had some sushi... some mexican... and i think something else in there during the eight hours... overall it was nice and chill and i think we are about 25%done with the mixing.

sure would be nice to be done with the recording, but... nope.

we had intended to end the session at 8pm, but we got started an hour late and then went off the clock for about 40 mins. i didn't end up leaving until after 9:30 and the rest of the evening's plans were in peril.

the idea was to take a caravan of friends out to oxford/jax to see through the sparks play. the venue - brothers, sucks, but the band is good enough to make it worthwhile. then some people were gonna go over to the LSS compound and do the hookah. yeah. do it.

by the time i got home and changed and talked to a few people it became obvious that it wasn't gonna happen. i had called jody, the singer for TTS and he said he would try to go on last so that we could get there later, but i wasn't 100% sure that it was gonna happen. and it takes at least an hour to get to the venue.

ashby, being hungover was the first to bail. and with him by default... christine... judah gave me the "if you had called me earlier" thing... and aaron was at an engagement party. traci and sensei leah were the only two that were game. and on point. and all about it.

unfortunately, by the time we got on the road... it very well may have been too late to see TTS if they hadn't have gone on last. and i didn't feel like making a 2 hour mistake to find out.

so i pulled the plug on my own birthday. instead the three of us met up with ashby and christine at the garage and commenced to drinking. and aaron lazar, bret, shep, et al... showed up. so it was kinda like last year.

aaron bought me a shot of citron that almost ended me. i'm still tasting it as i write this. i don't really remember what i did on sunday... was that when my mom left town to work in biloxi? i think so...

BTW... i've been hooked on google earth for two days. i've been to every place i've ever lived and a few places that i've worked. it's crazy that i can see downtown london and then the island i lived on in st. augustine... in 4 seconds.

actually... i just realized that i've lived on two islands. and eventually i'll probably live in manhattan. hmmm... ok. end of part one... part two will follow...

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
