the ghost of biggie smalls is haunting my myspace page. fellow myspacer, design student and m.c.d.c apostle, karen chenoa, has assumed my online identity for the week.

this week i'm editing "dreams" and "hwy" for our mixing session on friday afternoon. i wanted to get some editing and recording done this weekend, but all i managed was a synth part.

so what did i do last week...?

thursday night i went to see through the sparks play at the nick and they completely blew my mind. everytime i see them, they get better. they played a few new songs and had a very nice mix. traci and leah hooked me up with a fucking mountain of music. i love indie rock women. so giving. so pure of heart, so obscure.

friday night i did a lot of work at the office and ran errands. i went over to ashby's and then over to brett's where we all listened to a few hours of the notorious b.i.g. i was pretty into it. probably not as much as brett or aaron, but i was into it.

ashby and chrysla went back to his house, so i went over to homewood and watched tombstone with kim and jesse. tombstone, however entertaining, has so many homoerotic phrases, references and innuendo that it was hard to watch with a straight face. ...and they had mimosas over there, so the aesthetic was complete. hell, the theatre scene in the movie is set in a place called the bird cage. i got home about 4 or 5 and slept pretty late.

saturday i did some stuff around the house, messed around with some edits and loaded up some gear to take to the studio. i got there a little after 9pm, but jeff and i got to talking about business at the studio and my role as the guy heading up the photography... and i didn't leave until after 10:30. i was supposed to be meeting leah and traci for a party and they were pretty pissed.

it's funny when i hang out with new people... seeing that frustrated look on their faces as their evening melts away waiting on me. i'm an only child, who has free reign of a recording studio and no girlfriend.

translation: i'm pretty fucking self absorbed sometimes.

so i met them and we eventually found this halloween party that greg slamen of through the sparks was having. they followed me there and i basically dropped them off because i was trying to get to the nick before long story short went on. fortunately they didn't go on until 11:35pm. after watching their set and cordova's set, i was ready to get back to the party, but everyone wanted to see taylor hollingsworth play a few songs...

i had to get back to to the party which was pretty much already over at this point, so i had the long story short people call me for directions. at this point it is after 2am and traci and leah, tired of being hit on by geek swine, were ready to go.

unfortunately as soon as they left, the long story short kids came by. they hung out for a while and then had to head back to oxford. they were exhausted from partying all week. greg custom made me a huge black "cochise" mustache. it was killer. he made one for thomas mimikakis that made him look like jim croce.

i talked to greg's fiance' about photography... i had no idea she was a professional photographer. i checked out her site/portfolio on sunday. very fashion oriented, which is what i was into many years ago.

sunday i slept even later than i did on saturday and went down to the new office/studio space that myself, jeff and carl ross are going to split for running custom shirts, a photo studio, storage, etc. i also brought over some more gear that i'm not using. i have enough stuff to add to the gear list that we can make a small little old school hip-hop production suite to go along with the massive nuendo system and the smaller but powerful protools 24 mix system.

did i mention that i'm still coughing up nastiness? or at least i'm trying to...

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
