fascism in the post-punk era / hallowining / my death waits / a kinder, gentler and foldable shawn

so picking up where halloween left off... and backing up a bit.

i got into the worst traffic i've been in, in a long time. closed roads due to wrecks, double wide trailers on the interstate... more wrecks further up the interstate. i was supposed to arrive at the studio at noon. i got there at 1pm. crazy. but at least i had a mixing session to look forward to. for those keeping notes... that means we are getting closer to finishing.

so last friday jeff and i mixed a track tentatively titled "dreams." it took 8 hours to mix it. and it still isn't there yet. but it is air tight. very different. think so-cal harmonies. friday night i went to the rocky horror ball at the alabama theatre, but my ears were tuned to a tight studio room, not a massive theatre with tinny audio. my ears couldn't handle it. so i just hung out with my pal amber backstage and drank wine in a plastic cup.

she had to do a radio remote/appearance down the road at the grill, so i was commissioned to chaperone her. i sat in the back while she did her thing and ate some pesto pizza. my friend kim came in to have a drink with her roommate and my other friend traci showed up in yet another halloween costume. rainbow bright. we chatted for a bit, and around 1am or so i really needed some sleep.

saturday i organized data discs, edited and laid around. sunday was similar. just got some domestic shit done. i stopped by the studio for what was supposed to be 30 mins... around 7. i was there until after 1am. it's good to have an engineer that is chatty.

monday, halloween, i still wasn't feeling 100% because of my psuedo flu... but i decided around midnight to go to the nick and see if anything was going on. i ran into kim kelly, who used to sing w/ the ashes... she laid a trip hop demo cd on me. pretty good stuff. well done. but it is gonna fall flat if they don't develop the bass lines. that shit has to move. you only live once.

i hung out with traci, once again in rainbow bright gear... and we talked waaay too late. i got like 4 hours sleep. since then it's been a normal work week. tonight i'm going to resume editing. and guess what... i have taken over the guitar parts on a few tracks. it's the perks of spending hundreds upon hundreds of hours on this album. i get to finish it my way.

there are no good bands this weekend. that is sad. i miss los angeles. more than new york. go figure.

my friends in phoenix have been wanting me to visit... and i shall... as soon as i get a chance... until then... i'm going to have two foam-core life size effigies of myself delivered to them. one for lisa to abuse, and one for parties. they'll be able to fold me in half, and then prop me up at parties and take pictures with me. i even heard rumour that steve was going to document the foam-shawn experience via my own foam-core shawn myspace page.

i haven't been back to phoenix since i left. and now i return as a fake, flat piece of foam board. just like the people i used to live with. it doesn't get much better than that. irony people. get into it.

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
