i'm goin' back to cali - xma$ - everything is everything

i'm going back to cali for new years. i'm leaving tomorrow night. i'll be staying with MARY.CHAIN and her best friend / roommate, MARY.DEATH. also on board will be my old friends from phoenix, lisa and steve.

in terms of the cult that i started in september, this means that we will have, the two leaders of the cult - MARY.CHAIN and MARY.DEATH + the 1st apostle (myself) plus two other apostles...

if we gather up a few members of the mcdc, who live out in LA, we could damn near have a full congregation.

for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about... i started a love cult, that is called the death cult (the mary.chain.death.cult) which is sorta based in LA. it's a play on their names, their names of which, or a play on their names.

so that would be... maryjane = MARY.CHAIN
and... marybeth = MARY.DEATH = the MARY.CHAIN.DEATH.CULT

apparently, maryjane has some surprises for us... we will be drinking red absynth for a good part of the weekend. i'll be bringing a vintage bottle of robert modavi 1987 vichon / cabernet.

i'm gonna do some shopping on melrose and on NYE we are going to go to the dragonfly / the beauty bar and some sort of "illegal" after hours club. vh-1 is gonna be at the dragonfly filming for another episode of their "breaking bonaduce" reality show.

with this in mind... the possibility of being caught on tape... i'm not only wearing eyeliner... i'm gonna have to get a facial.

why is LA always so good to me? kinda makes NYC look like dogshit.

what else is goin' on...

i've watched some great dvd's this week. the rolling stones rock n' roll circus and a bio/doc about miles davids called a different kind of blue, which meticulously covers the period when he first went "electric." and when he went electric, it was a much bigger leap than dylan's.

contained within the dvd was the entire 38 min. set that miles davis and his band played at the isle of wight in august 1970. that also happens to be the day that the largest crowd in history gathered for a pop festival. bigger than woodstock.

the rolling stones dvd was incredible... let me put it this way... the segment featuring the band "dirty mac" which featured johnn lennon on gtr. and vocals, eric clapton on lead gtr., keith richards on bass and mitch mitchel on drums... playing killer stuff like "yur blues"... was NOT the highlight of the show. amazing.

xmas

for xmas this year, i only had a few people to shop for... i got everything done by last friday and went up to rogersville on saturday night. the night before, i watched long story short play their first show at workplay. great set, and they threw in some stuff that i hadn't heard before.

saturday i got up late and left with my mom for rogersville. i wrapped some presents and took my computer so that i could FINALLY upgrade all of this software that i just bought. after weeks of trying, i finally was able to upgrade MAC OSX and protools to version 7. that in itself made my xmas. on sunday, we ate with the "big family" twice... and i crahsed at the cottage for most of the day.

sunday night we drove back to bham so that i could catch the big xmas show at the nick... i didn't actually leave the house until 10 ish, but i managed to catch most of duquette johnston's set...

i went over to brett's for pacific stereo's set and pursuaded everyone over there to try to make it for through the sparks. the through the sparks set was one of their best. especially the new songs. the last song was incredible. according to jody, this is one of the directions that they are heading... very impressive. the nick was very very packed... well beyond fire code. oh... and i finally got a copy of audio iotas from greg.

i ran into some new friends (aaron) and some old friends from the hippodrum days. some people who i thought i would run into... people from around the country in town for xmas... never materialized. taylor hollingsworth also pulled out a great set.

it was a rock n' roll xmas for sure. and so far, no earthquakes or tsumanis.

tonight i'm going to see the jam band galactic at workplay. ashby's girlfriend chrysla got me a ticket for xmas. hopefull i'll make it home before too late. i have to work all day tomorrow and fly to LA at 6:45. i'm gonna be a tired monkey.

when i get back, we will be done with the holidays and we can start-to-finish the mixing of the record. i want it out of my life.

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
