city stages weekend 2006

thursday...

the spots played for the alabama independent moviemakers networking party. it was just three of us playing and we really didn't play anything all that interesting until the end. but the end was worth it. its hard inventing music on the "spot." it was very humid, but it was a good time. i picked up mary jane from the airport at 11 and we went to marty's for a few mins.

friday...

i watched the bridges midday set in 145 degree weather. they played about a 20 min set and did a cool medley that included the "i've got soul but i'm not a soldier" line by the killers. all of their songs are hits. its stupid. their harmonies were super tight. they had some kind of issue with an acoustic for a second and i think nat blew a speaker... but they rebounded nicely.

they'll probably be like taylor hicks soon... a talented local act that blows up big and then forgets my name. they are playing at the railyard this weekend.

ran some errands and went shopping on friday. spent a ton of cash at naked art and hobby lobby.

at 8:30 we got to rojo and waited for jessi-co to show up. traci and leah showed up (i thought to join us) but they had really just gotten there and happened to see us. i was a girl for 45 mins. traci wore a suit that matched her car... which got stuck. i came back to rojo after dropping off the girls in order to help traci's firebird (ha) out of the gravel, but by the time i got there, some good old boys were helping her. i felt very useful.

had a brief party at my apt that involved a rotating roster of friends.
i finally got my apt finished. i've been decorating on and off for months. aaron was super funny. ciera came by with her bf. she's really funny in person. had some wine mixed with coke. interesting. kinda tastes like sangria. we went to 1st and 23rd and then mary's friend mark got us into the furnace. 1st and 23rd was sexier than i remembered, but the furnace felt like a library. guys are creepy.

a lot of those topless dancers looked kinda silly. i think one of them was kinda cute but i'm not sure. kim was amused.

saturday...

we watched an emo band from texas on the miller stage (flyleaf). i like standing on the stage because you get all of the energy coming from the band, but its not as loud. the bass player for flyleaf looked and acted insane. they closed with a nin cover, which i thought was cool.

on the homegrown stage we watched kiss me at the gate... again.. another amp blew up. we wanted to watch 13ghosts but we went to go move the truck and stopped by my office where some pre-city stages shenanigans were taking place. i did get to see beitthemeans, who i thought were incredible. i got to see my long lost friends amber and judah for a few mins. bitm's singer, jeff started talking about guns and revolution. it was interesting. he's a shit hot guitarist.

tried to get backstage during yellowcard, but they had locked down the access. i heard that snoop's show was kinda silly.

sunday...

we watched the allman brothers and a few mins of the beach boys. the beach boys were sad. really, its just mike love. no wilson brothers. it felt geriatric and pathetic. mike love is the judas of rock n roll, and a douche from what i hear.

ended each night at the garage, which is a pub i need to go to more often.

taylor is on the cover of people. lame.

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
