a friend of mine... er... a younger friend of mine said they had heard the song dance the night away, but didn't know it was van halen. this has probably happened before. people born too late. also, dance the night away has a soaring 70's chorus and no guitar solo. its enough to throw anyone off.
so anyway... here's this first clip of van halen, live in fresno, 1979. some hardcore believers have expressed that fresno... (a large california suburb, where van halen first took root beyond pasadena/anahiem and LA) ... was one of the best places to see them play... and in 1979, on the cusp of greatness, but still hungry for silly pop stardom... heck this may have been one of their high points.
and the second clip is from the opening night of the current reunion tour with david lee roth. when the eagles reunited, they said "hell freezes over." well, david lee roth is touring with van halen, and eddie's 16 year old son is playing bass as good as michael anthony. hell hasn't frozen over... jesus has come back to earth as one of those tech guys at best buy.
ahhhhh. yes. jesus. so... here's the older, stiffer (probably has back problems) david lee roth. looking old, sounding good, looking trim, but overall presenting an old jewish obgyn doctor vibe. pay attention, watch how he shakes his left arm when he's holding the microphone by his waist. creepy. when comparing these two clips... the thrill isn't gone... there is still a great southern-cali party rock vibe from a bygone era... but the HAIR is definitely gone. ouch. and somebody, please... give ed a sandwich.
the third clip is dave doing his "traditional" solo acoustic ice cream man bit. this clip is wonderfully nostalgic and sappy.... but effective nonetheless. they delivered some very good karma to backyard parties in their time. its worth a listen.
he talks about getting a small apt in nyc in a bad area, and other experiences... at one point he says..."i grew up in the suburbs, you know... the suburbs, where they tear down the trees and then name the streets after them." he then kicks into full-blown, "remember when we were young" stuff... and boy... he lays it on thick.
he actually released a song on his 2nd solo record in 1988 called damn good times. it was pretty much this same vibe. dave is a sap. his monologue about smoking weed as a teen is priceless. "i remember it was thursday, 1972."
this is why sammy will never win. dave has enough wit to fuel an oil tanker. please pardon this 2nd post about VH, but you must understand, at age 9, they were IT.
