some info/updates re: superphonic records, a great local label -
contrary to popular assumption, i've never been a professional live drummer in the past. i've played bass live for several years, and played drums live in high school and college... and played a lot of drumming studio sessions. but it wasn't until last year that i began to play live as a hired drummer. in 2006 and 2007, i've been touring around as a drummer for duquette jonston & john p. strohm, both formerly of noteworthy indie bands, and now each are performing as solo artists with recent solo releases.
both duquette and john recently enlisted jody nelson, (who fronts through the sparks and runs alamalibu studio), to lend production and tracking on each of their new solo releases. both john and duquette are now signed to birmingham based record label, superphonic records.
a.a. bondy (aka scott bondy), a former bandmate of duquette and front man of verbena, has also recently released a solo record on superphonic. as has been the case with all superphonic recording artists, a.a. bondy's cd release was held at bottletree a few months ago. bondy lives in upstate new york, but still has many roots in bham in addition to his label. bondy and duquette co-headlined a show at bottletree last year that signalled a new direction for both songwriters.
bondy can now safely be described as dylan-esce vs. his cobainian tendencies of the mid 90's. duquette has been compared to neil young on more than one occassion, although his music contains a spiritual component that is very direct and haunting. bondy, strohm and johnston are also good at delivering very catchy hooks.
the next cd release for a superphonic artist will be for label head greg summerlin. his cd release will be at bottletree on november 16th. his guest will be kate taylor, who also has a home on the label.
bottletree just posted a clip of this blake babies performance posted at rollingstone.com. john looks pretty much the same in this clip as he does now... but duquette, known then as daniel johnston... is wirey and sporting a fantastic rick bass. good clip. i'm guessing this is from 2001, a little before i set foot on the shores of birmingham.
strohm has a new baby girl and is playing a show at bottletree in about a month. the tentative backing band line-up for this show will be 2 members of the saturdays and two members of the spots (myself and clint wells). the saturdays, you guessed it... are also on the superphonic label. duquette recently got engaged to his long time girlfriend morgan jones. this brings the total this year to at least 10 couples i know who are engaged at the moment. nutty.
ok, so... here's the blake babies clip:
