intense non sequitur round 2011

first up... found this fake vintage ad campaign this morning. love this kinda thing. retro is my deal. also this is technically my first blog post of the decade. i found these images on what has become my go-to site for design oriented images, designspiration.net - this site is closely affiliated with my favorite blog, iso50.com.

so i finished up the year at a very low-key year year's eve party in crestwood, in the midst of a crazy winter storm. the winter has gotten quite intense so far this year, with no less than 2 ice/snow storms, with one more on the way this week. more non sequiturs... my car still has a dent in the truck from 10/29/10 that i'll hopefully get fixed this week. still not moving forward fast enough with the synthesizer production muzak stuff.

last month however, i did finish the artwork for the new through the sparks singles compilation titled "almanac (mmx) year of beasts." the idea behind the design, is to present an anti-album cover for what is really, an anti-album. the album is actually a collection of singles that were released every month during 2010, for free on the band's web site. being that we are releasing this physically, i wanted to approach the covers as being very tactile... so i used some of jody's actual hand written lyrics for the opening track, devil suit.

the lyrics continue around the spine and onto the back cover, with the assumption that anyone seeing the front of the cover in a store (or online?) might want to pick it up to see what's on the back. i guess its sort of a quasi-psychological approach. anyway, here's the cover itself. i guess i'm leaking this, but it's supposed to be released sometime next month anyway...

i'm also including on here, a few after-the-fact singles covers i did last month, just for fun. these are all posted on the tts facebook page, for no other reason, but to complete the full 12 singles covers. i still have one to go! i posted the majority of the single covers on my end of the year blog in december. below are the latest. unlike a lot of the single designs last year, these newer covers were put together quite fast. the phrenology head image for 'enemies' was scanned from a book of psychic sciences that i've been having fun reading lately. gotta love reed's books.

what else... i've been following the egyptian uprising very closely. i'm somewhat optimistic about the outcome. the protests are still ongoing, but the regime is toast - its just a matter of time. the obama administration has been handling the nuances of the situation reasonable well in my opinion. my over all stance on this administration has softened in the past few months.

other music stuff... i played a show with the greenleaves on january 20th. not much of a crowd, but i actually played bass decently, so i can't complain. apparently, not one, but two members of that band are moving out of state, so i guess that project is over? i dunno. i also finally got in a rehearsal a few weeks ago with electroliner. we hadn't played together since october, and i really hope that we get a recording project going soon. maybe by the summer?

we got our plane tickets (one way!) last week for sxsw. through the sparks are playing the birmingham showcase, sponsor and coordinated by our record label, and a new label in town, called communicating vessels, spearheaded by some of the folks from remi zero.

rubys has done a decent amount of rehearsing lately, but as of yet, we haven't booked any new shows other than a sxsw benefit show, nor have we started recording yet.

i guess i'll save the rest for the next journal entry. one more thing... this is my twitter profile photo. heh.

republicans + killer artist + jesse payne album

this is one of the best clips i've seen regarding the election, via salon.com, could this be the real enemy ? also check this out... 1. this lady does some great art. it reminds me of some of matthew barney's work. 2. she uses dead animals. and - yep... she kills them herself. that's creepy and brilliant at the same time. here's the nathalia edenmont exhibit . and here's the rationale for the art-killings via the host gallery, wetterling. i don't really have an opinion. i just thought i should share that little art nugget. ...moving on... i got the final packaged verison of the jesse payne solo album. it was very well done. the front and back photo is of canterbury church here in birmingham. the liner book is solid white, with plain black text. very simple and clean. i like it. i'll post a pic in a few days. pay attention to rock radio in the next several weeks and you'll probably hear some promos for the album that is slated to drop in election day. ...

rubys / end scene

my good friend grey watson, with whom i play in two bands, is moving to south korea at the beginning of june for a one year teaching contract. he's in his late 20's, so this is pretty much the perfect opportunity to go abroad. this will effectively dismantle our rock trio, rubys... and will put a definite damper on through the sparks. we were planning on starting an album soon, but everyone stayed in a holding pattern until we knew what grey was going to do. now hopefully we can at least record some live demos of the new material so it doesn't get lost. at some point we might release the ep we recorded as a 5 piece at jody nelson's house in early 2010. at my age, i don't think in terms of years anymore. they go by too fast. 5 years ago, i was already recording with the spots. life moves pretty fast. anyway... so rubys will be going out in a blaze of glory. we have two shows lined up with the grenadines - one at the nick in birmingham and one somewhere in tuscaloosa...

through the sparks darfur concert clips

mark nelson, jody neslon's brother... has posted some youtube clips of the set we played during the darfur benefit show. i'm the black speck in the left corner. you can see me rocking the tamborine on a few of these. everytime i played keys or guitar i seem to vanish. even the huge black grand piano seems to be absent. great show. great sound. huge crowd. lots of fun. and i think we saved africa... ha. through the sparks proper - greg, jody, the mimikakis brothers and james... all played with a great sense of groove during this set. i had time to listen... great stuff. several new songs were played during the set. like a dove , buddy holly's gun , vampires , turn everything off . the set not only featured chad fisher, gary wheat and myself... but also featured a 7 minute multi-percussionist ensemble, which you can see the beginnings of, on the clip buddy holly's gun . the horn hook on like a dove is pure magic. the horns also sound fantastic on the final if and...
