back in bizness - meet the spots

so... for about a month, my hosting service decided to hold my domain name hostage. shawnavery.com expired on jan 20th and i was given one email as a reminder to renew. i replied before the domain expired and asked them to renew my domain name and to bill my account. i heard nothing back for weeks. i got a bit worried after 3 weeks because after a domain is expired for a month, it goes into this weird holding phase for two months. it would have been very expensive to buy my own name back. so i threatened them with litigation and charge backs. that seemed to do the trick. i would have been working on getting all of my files uploaded, but when the domain is out, the hosting is out as well. so i was basically holding a dead site for a month. so what has happened... we've finished tracking the record and pretty much have mixed it. a few weeks back we dropped two songs from the track listing. this made sense not only for wiseblood, but it will actually enhance our next reco...

hip-hop and the rapture single

here's an interesting article about one of the most important pop singles in history, in my opinion. is there irony in a hot, skinny, white punk rock chick-turned pop star, introducing america to hip-hop culture and rap? one odd aspect of this article... it doesn't mention that the dj doing a cameo in the video for rapture, is none other than jean-michel baquiat , the greatest hip-hop / graffiti / scripting - oriented painter in history. but he was just barely beginning to gain prominence in 1981. (interesting to omit, considering - unlike basquiat, blondie has never had a movie made about them). debbie harry returned the cameo favor by appearing as a bum-turned-fairy god-mother in the low-budget basquiat quasi-biopic, "downtown '81." in 1996, baquiat's wide release biopic was released. Blondie scored their second number one Pop hit in the U.S. in the spring of 1980 with Call Me, their collaboration with Dance producer Giorgio Moroder from the soundtrack to A...

what's new? it's the end of the world

the past few weeks at the firm have been fairly laid back... until today. i'm doing some legwork for a 01.23 trial date. which actually is 3 years to the day after the ashes played a freezing gig at workplay... less than a year later we started working on the record. now, over two years later, we are within one guitar track of being completed. and we've already mixed half the record. it's not gonna be " ok compute r", but i promise that there will be an interesting sonic statement or two. but for the most part, it's just catchy folk rock. no biggie. thanks for the kooky comments though... the weekend after i got back from los angeles, ashby and i holed up in the studio for 16 hours during friday and saturday recording and re-recording most of the lead vocals on the album. this means that some vocal parts have now been recorded three and four times. and others were recorded for the first time. that first friday back in town, i met up with leah so that we could ...

new years... west coast

I went to LA for the weekend. i did a ton of shopping on melrose two days in a row. i dropped a small fortune... but after the smoke cleared, i had purchased and had taylored... the greatest pair of jeans i've ever seen. i hung out with my best friends from phoenix. i hadn't seen them since about early september of 2001. it was incredible. i stayed with maryjane and marybeth on thursday night... i stayed with matt, tara and lisa in their hotel on friday night. it was incredible seeing them again on saturday we shopped on melrose all day... then went back to the hotel, got dressed... by then kito (steve) was in town with his gf, liz. we all left and headed over to the marys' house. madness followed... red absynthe was a flowin'. after that it was a fetish fashion show / NYE party at the dragonfly and then an afterhours (hush hush) party at the velvet margarita... we all took a ton of photos... but the ones below are all from lisa's camera. i'll post more later......

i'm goin' back to cali - xma$ - everything is everything

i'm going back to cali for new years. i'm leaving tomorrow night. i'll be staying with MARY.CHAIN and her best friend / roommate, MARY.DEATH. also on board will be my old friends from phoenix, lisa and steve. in terms of the cult that i started in september, this means that we will have, the two leaders of the cult - MARY.CHAIN and MARY.DEATH + the 1st apostle (myself) plus two other apostles... if we gather up a few members of the mcdc, who live out in LA, we could damn near have a full congregation. for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about... i started a love cult, that is called the death cult (the mary.chain.death.cult) which is sorta based in LA. it's a play on their names, their names of which, or a play on their names. so that would be... maryjane = MARY.CHAIN and... marybeth = MARY.DEATH = the MARY.CHAIN.DEATH.CULT apparently, maryjane has some surprises for us... we will be drinking red absynth for a good part of the weekend. i'll be b...

thoughts on the passing of lennon and of time itself

in a truly post-modern gesture... i'm reposting some stuff from myspace... the first entry here, a eulogy of lennon, was written on the 8th... what follows (after lennon) is quite possibly one of the best things i've ever written. ok, i'm kidding... but it's pretty funny... its my very own awards ceremony. and thanks to greg slamen, the awards themselves have a name now... "the panties." the music awards blog was originally posted on december 13th... as many who know me are aware, i go thru classic rock listening binges from time to time. from the time i was a kid, i've gone thru these phases of getting interested in a band or artist and then gorging myself on their material. in 1983 it was michael jackson. in the late 80's and even into the early 90's it was van halen. in the mid 90's it was tears for fears and fleetwood mac. for some reason... in 1999 i flaked the fuck out and went nuts for cibo matto. i saw them in concert in phoenix / lil...
